Our club scored 468 points and came 2nd out of the 23 clubs competing and our average points per swimmer was 31.2 placing us also 2nd out of the 13 qualifying clubs. Age division winners were Emma, Rhonda, Wendy, Ann, Jeanne and Bill. Runners up were Kay and Paul and Maureen was placed third in her age division. West Auburn Long Distance – 3rd December
Ann Campbell and Bill Walker were our only representatives at West Auburn and both won their events. Bill’s 400m butterfly time of 12.48.80 took more than 5 minutes off the national record for his 80-84 age group. Congratulations Bill.
Newcastle – 19th November
A bright sunny day welcomed us to our home carnival at Charlestown. The erection team spent some hours the night before making good the tent city to protect the timekeepers and it was with trepidation we went home hoping the structure would still be there in the morning. It was.
31 swimmers from our club and together with the support of families and ex club members the carnival was set up and ready to go with time to spare.
Due to the unexpected large number of swimmers Meet Director Phil Murray got some of the 400m swimmers in the pool early and by the 11am advertised starting time many had knocked over their swim. The carnival ran smoothly and many compliments were received for the day and also especially for our chef Theresa who ran the hamburger tent and satisfied the hungry swimmers.
Our club was the top point scoring club with 1,049 points and came 8th in the average points. Age division winners were Emma, Kay, Wendy, Ann, Jeanne, Paul and Bill. Runners up were Rhonda, Michelle, Maureen, Adam, Sam and Craig whilst third places went to Bronwen, Robin and Ian.
New club records were set by Emma (200m I/M), Jackie (50m Backstroke), Jeanne (200m Backstroke), Adam (200m Butterfly), Ian (50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle) and Sam (50m Breaststroke). Ian’s 100m freestyle time of 56.00 seconds set a new state record and the men's relay team of Adam, Ian, Paul and Sam set a new National record time of 4.05.43 for the 120+ age group.
Dinner at Cha Chas restaurant at The Junction with members of the Warringah club was a great night with about 30 attendees. Those two wonderful swimmers with excellent swimming knowledge, Julie Phillips and Kate Cockrem represented the Novos in the ultimate knowledge test and came away with a magnificent trophy and gold medals. Warringah Club presented six ‘Fusionultimate Masters Super Hero’ T shirts to our members incorporating the Warringah and Novos logos and these will be worn with pride.
Many thanks to our members, ex members and families for making this carnival a wonderful success.

Port Macquarie – 5th November
Unlike the last northern trek (to Yamba if you forgot) the weather gods looked kindly on our band of warriors heading for the Port Macquarie seaside. Seventeen swimmers took their place and came away happy and satisfied. Our club finished with 643 points (second only to the host club) and finished third in the average point score (37.82) out of ten qualifying clubs.
Age division winners were Kay, Jeanne, Paul, Carl and Malcolm and Kim was runner up in her age division. Our relay teams ended up with two firsts, a second and a third. Our mens 200+ team (Steve, Phil, Garry and Paul) was pitted in a thrilling match race with Port’s 200+ team. Last swimmer Paul managed to get into the lead in the last 10m and won by .69sec.
New club records were established by Jeanne (100 freestyle and 200 I/M), Steve (200 I/M) and Paul (50 fly and 200 I/M).
New members Garry Hughes and John McKenzie had their first carnival hitouts with admirable results.
The team gathered at Westport Bowlo on Friday night which was highlighted by our reserved table being the only table in the club to be dressed with a linen tablecloth. The VP received many plaudits for this commendable effort. Saturday night was to the other bowlo for a dinner and presentation organized by Port Macquarie club. Seven new club records were established. Jeanne (50 fly and 100 fly), Robin (100 free) and two more for Ian (50 free and 100 free).

Nine of our members traveled down the highway to be welcomed by sun, rain, lightning, thunder, sun again, rain again and lighting again. Super Coach Adam did it again setting a new National record for the 25m backstroke event. His time of 13.00 broke the National record by .87 and the State record by 1.92. Well done Adam. Yamba – 10-13th June
Bureau of Meteorology weather report Thursday 9th June for Yamba. “Cloudy, scattered showers, winds S to SW averaging 15-30km/h, daytime temperature reaching 19 degrees”. No problems, we all know the weather forecasters get it wrong 90% of the time, and we were right.
Scattered showers, pigs arse, nearly 200mm fell from Saturday to Monday, top temperature Saturday and Sunday was 14.3 and winds reached 59km/h, so the Bureau nearly got it right. Friday dawned and sixteen finely tuned Novos swimmers and five partners set out on their
crusade looking for a pleasant weekend and a little bit of swimming.
Friday night venue was changed to the Yamba Bowling Club where we were joined by seven Warringah members. Last minute warm down and tapering instructions were received and the relay teams were our announced by club captain Nick. The “A Team” (Phil, Steve, Paul and Mike) of course wanted all the glory and received their shirts, caps, lipstick, rouge, eye shadow and make up, but in the end they were still ugly. Graham Campbell and Wilson Gamble from Warringah were made honorary reserves for the “A Team” and graciously received their T-shirts. In the interests of our club members a few stayed to ensure none of our members had been left in the club by closing time. The last bus delivered the leftovers back to headquarters.
Saturday arrived overcast and cool and that was as good as it got. We lost our marquee to the Clarence River club and took up camp in a cosy corner. VP Phil somehow arranged a gas heater which helped us enormously and we were the envy of all the other clubs. Our four relay teams won all their events, both freestyle and medley and then it was back to camp to warm up and prepare for another dinner at the local Chinese. Alas all good plans are meant to fail and we ended up at the Yamba Shores Tavern. Once again the leftovers were delivered home by the last bus.
A few passing showers were enough on the Saturday night to collapse our marquee and when we arrived at the pool on Sunday it was on the scrap heap. Sunday can only be described as bracing and the rain was heavy enough at one stage for the officials to suspend the meet and contemplate whether to call the carnival off. It did continue and the last two events were held in torrential rain. No one was dry, warm or happy except Theresa who completed her first ever 100m fly (eventually). Jo Farmer and Julie Phillips were also extremely happy after their day on the Jazz cruise sailing the Clarence.
Kay was selected as the lead swimmer in the NSW team state of origin swim off. Unfortunately they came second. Fifteen club records were established. Age division winners were Kay, Jeanne, Robin and Bill. Second places went to Maureen, Paul, Mike,
Kevin, Carl and Malcolm.
Our club was second to the host club (out of 16 NSW clubs) in aggregate points with 1149 points, and our average points of 71.81 placed us first out of seven clubs with more than five swimmers. Warringah were gracious in accepting Gerald the golden turkey.
Drive home on Monday was the pits. Never stopped raining but it was good to be home when we heard that the Pacific Highway was closed to traffic on Tuesday with roads flooded and that Yamba had been isolated.
