2012 Season Review
Charlestown – 10th November
Last year the day of our carnival was a beautiful day but the weather gods obviously thought we have had it good for so long it was time for a change. So we ended up with southerly winds and 19 degrees but all was not lost because the water was a warm 27 degrees.
Twenty seven of our members did their duty and performed to their best. At the end of the day we led the overall point score with 954 points and came 5th in the average point score with 35.33 points.
Thirteen new club records were established. Emma (100 free and 200 I/M), Caireen (200 back), Tracey (100 back), Paul (100 free, 200 back and 50 fly), Craig (100 fly), Graham (50 free), Mike Dunn (50 breast, 200 breast and 100 fly) and Carl (200 free). Great to see Graham Campbell and our new member Caireen Zaina get their names on the club record list. Three new club relay record were set in the mens 200, 240 and 280 teams.
Age group winners were Emma, Rhonda, Kay, Jeanne, Paul and another new member Barry Barker. Runners up were Wendy, Maureen and Craig and third places went to Caireen, Kim, Mike Cockrem and Carl.
The results for the day pumped us back up into second place in Division 1 behind Warringah. We are now 356 points in front of third place Ryde and can hopefully hold that place to the end of the year.
We entered six relay teams and finished with five firsts and one second.
A special thanks was received from our State President for the outstanding way our ladies looked after her and other officials with their lunches and refreshments. Well done girls.
Thanks to all of our members and their families for their support in making our carnival a success.
Gerald the Golden Turkey remained safely in the hands of the Warringah club but unless we can outscore them at the West Auburn carnival on 8th December it looks like Gerald may spend his first Christmas in Newcastle.
As usual a team of Warringah club members and ourselves had a delightful dinner at The Junction on the Saturday night.
Port Macquarie – 27th October
Twelve hardy souls took to the road and headed north for a weekend at Port. Port Macquarie is a sleepy little town with only the locals, us and about 50,000 tourists there for the Australian Ironman Half Triathlon, it was buzzing.
Our 453 points placed us second to the host club out of the 18 clubs competing and we were 4th in the average point score.
Age division winners were Wendy and Bill, runners up were Kay and Malcolm and Robin, Garry and Carl were third in their age divisions.
As testament to the hard training on the Friday night we regret to advise that no club records were broken (not even close).
In the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle events our three gun swimmers (Kay, Garry and Phil) were swimming in adjacent lanes on each occasion. Unfortunately for the male egos Kay was the winner in each event. Phil however got his revenge and beat Kay in the raffle. Kevie was the only swimmer disqualified for the day leaving the blocks five seconds before the rest of the swimmers in his heat.
Our three relay teams scored two first places and a second with the ‘A’ team having to fight off four other clubs for their first place.
Westport Bowling club was selected as the eating house on both nights and in keeping with past traditions the last patrons to be kicked out happened to be some people we all know.
It was with great sorry that we had to pass ‘Gerald’ over to Warringah and hope they can keep him for the rest of the year.
Ettalong – 20,21st October (State Short Course Championships)
Sixteen healthy and strong swimmers headed south for the two day state short course championships at Ettalong.
Great results from the whole team. Overall our club was placed 5th (out of 40 clubs) with 627 points. Twenty six new club records were established which included two relay records and twenty four individual.
Because of the close competition with other clubs there were many great races over the 2 days. Some highlights were:
- Adam seeing off the pretenders to his IM crown by blasting a blistering 1:00.7 (see video below).
- Ian causing a commotion within the breaststroke fraternity by beating all-comers with a very quick 1:09 - smashing the state record.
- Emma turning on the afterburners over the final 25m of her 200 free to come from behind and win her heat comfortably.
New club records were established by Emma (200 free and 100 I/M), Madeleine (100 free and 200 back), Michelle 200 breast, 50 fly and 100 fly), Ann (200 back), Robin (200 free), Adam (50 breast and 100 I/M), Jon (200 back and 200 I/M), James Turnham (100 back), Ian 100 free, 100 back, 100 breast and 100 I/M), Paul (50 free, 100 free, 100 fly and 100 I/M) and Mike Dunn (200 breast and 200 I/M). The new times can be checked in our club records folder.
Ian was the top achiever with five gold medals, three State Records and one National Record. To top it off he was named ‘Male swimmer of the Meet’. Congratulations Ian.
As an indication how competitive our team was at the meet they competed in 70 events and came away with 27 gold medals, 24 silver medals and 10 bronze medals.
Our friends from Sydney at the Warringah club won the top club points score and we congratulate them. Fortunately for us ‘Gerald’ was not up for grabs so he stays on the North Shore for another week.
Warringah – 6th October
Despite a number of dropouts we still had eleven starters for our Warringah quest and a clever group they were too.
Overall we came fourth out of 28 clubs with 436 points and second in the average points with 39.64 points (out of 11 qualifying clubs). Age group winners were Michelle, Paul and Bill. Kay was runner up in her age division and Malcolm got a third.
Fifteen new club records were established. Michelle (25 breast, 100 breast and 100 fly), Tracey (25 back and 100 back), Wendy (100 breast), Paul (25 free, 50 free, 100 free and 50 fly), Mike Dunn (25 free, 25 breast and 100 fly) and Carl (25 free).
Wendy established a new state record for her 100 breast and it stood for about five minutes until Kim Brennan reduced it again a few heats later.
Tracey’s time in the 100 back was 6 seconds faster than her swim at Ettalong in May and it looks like there will be many more club records to come for her. Sorry Theresa but Michelle’s 100 fly just tipped out your time from Yamba last year.
Our two relay teams got a first and second and both broke existing club relay records.
In the total BPS points we slipped further behind Manly and Ryde (we have no hope of catching Warringah) but with upcoming carnivals in Port Macquarie, Newcastle and Raymond Terrace with a little effort we should get ourselves back to second behind Warringah by the end of the year.
Of course we inherited ‘Gerald’ the golden turkey again but with a good turnout at Raymond Terrace he will spend his usual Christmas holidays back on Sydney’s north shore.
Lake Macquarie – 29th September
Eighteen healthy members made it to Toronto for the Lake Macquarie Crocs carnival. One of our star swimmers Dr Ian could not make it because he was medically unfit. Maybe he should change doctors.
Top results for our club. First overall with 726 points (out of 22 clubs) and also first in the average points with 40.33 (out of eight clubs qualifying).
Individual points winners were Rhonda, Kay, Wendy Ann, Adam, Paul, Malcolm and Bill. Second places to Michelle, Maureen and Carl.
Eight new club records were established. Tracey – 100m back, Jon – 200m free, Paul – 50m free, 100m free, 50m fly and 100m I/M, Mike Cockrem – 100m free and 100m I/M.

Congratulations to all.
Our four relay teams came away with three firsts and one second.
The golden turkey was graciously passed over to Warringah but alas it will be returned to us next week at the Warringah carnival.
NSW Short Course Relay Championships (SOPAC) – 22nd July
A fit and healthy finely tuned team of twelve ventured south to SOPAC for the Masters Relay Carnival.
Each swimmer was allowed five swims so we ended up with fifteen teams getting stuck into 25m and 50m races. There were five firsts, one second, two thirds, four fourths and a couple of fifths. Over 330 swimmers took part in the day so our results were highly creditable. Our club scored 242 points and were placed 9th out of 18. Many Sydney clubs had strong representation and our average point score would probably have won the day if it had been calculated.
Highlight of the day was our ‘A’ team of Adam, Jon, Paul and Ian who won the 4 x 25 freestyle (46.63), 4 x 25 medley (52.47), 4 x 50 freestyle (1.41.91) and 4 x 50 medley (1.55.38). Their time in the 4 x 25 medley missed the national record by 16/100ths of a second.
Many excellent times were swum but only the first swimmers times over 50m were recognized. Mike Cockrem established a new club record in the 50m freestyle in his age division (32.57). Ten new club relay records were established.
Adam and Ian were presented with National Record certificates by State President Jane during the lunch break.
Hunter Festival of Sport (Toronto) – 14th July
The chlorine fairies arrived at the Toronto pool before the swimmers and left their handiwork for everyone to taste and smell. Poor Kevie swan two 25m events and retired for the afternoon with severe bloodshot eyes.
We welcomed back to the fold Mike Dunn after a few years leave of absence and he obliged by recording three new club records for his age division.
In spite of the water issues 16 Novos swam their hearts out and the club came away with the top points for the day. Unfortunately these points did not count towards the state BPS point score.
Eighteen new club records were established. Emma (100 free, 200 free, 400 free and 800 free), Michelle (400 breast), Robin (50 free and 800 free), Jon (200 free, 400 free and 100 back), Craig (400 free and 50 back), Mike Dunn (25 breast, 25 fly and 100 I/M), Alan (800 free) and Carl (100 free and 400 free). See the club records folder for times.
Michelle’s time of 7.10.16 for the 400 breast broke Wendy’s previous time by three tenths of a second. Wendy’s claim that it should not be counted because Michelle had bigger feet than her was referred to the club lawyers but dismissed on the grounds that Wendy’s feet had probably shrunk in recent years and there was no record of how big her feet were when she set the record.
Emma set new club records in the 200m and 400m freestyle in her 800m swim, Craig set a new 400m time in his 800m swim and Jon a new 200m time in his 400m swim.
Age division winners were Emma, Michelle, Wendy, Robin, Jon, Carl, Malcolm and Bill. Mike Dunn was runner up in his age division and Rhonda and Alan gained third places.
Yamba – 9th and 10th June
Most members who attended the Yamba carnival last year listened to the weather gods and made a wise decision to give this year a miss. The three who didn’t listen suffered the consequences. The weather was almost identical except the rain this year wasn’t torrential.
Malcolm and Carl won their age divisions and Alan came 4th in his age division. Our total points of 190 placed us 8th out of the 16 clubs.
Queensland won the ‘State of Origin’ relay by a fingernail. Bev Giveen of Warringah club was just pipped by a fast finishing Queensland swimmer.
We graciously accepted Gerald the Golden Turkey back into our keeping and it looks like we may have him for a couple of months until we get some local carnivals.

Wett Ones – 26th May
Only two starters for this carnival, Jon and Robin. The late start and then the trip home makes this carnival a bit of a nightmare for many members.
Great results though. Jon won his three events and topped his age division and Robin came 4th in her age division. 58 points placed the club 18th out of 27 clubs competing.

Ettalong – 5th May
A healthy team of twenty one swimmers headed south on the team bus to Ettalong with new members Tracey Whalan and Amy Todd lining up for their first carnival. Novos were first in the overall point score with 754 points and fourth in the average point score (out of 19 qualifying clubs).
Age division winners were Emma, Amy, Kay, Wendy, Ann, Jon and Ian. Malcolm was third in his age division. Ian’s swims were outstanding and he broke four National Records in each of his events - 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m I/M and 200m I/M. Congratulations Ian.
In addition to Ian’s records another fourteen club records were established. Emma (100 free and 100 I/M), Michelle (50 breast, 25 fly and 100 I/M), Kay (50 free and 100 free), Robin (200 back), Jon (200 I/M) and Carl (50 back, 100 back, 200 back and 25 fly). You can see who has moved up to the next age division.
Our five relay teams had two firsts, one second and two thirds.
It was a relief to hand Gerald over to the Warringah Club for safe keeping until the next carnival.
AUSSI 2012 National Championships – Adelaide 13-16 April
Ian, Bill, & Adam at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre
Three of our guns slipped off to Adelaide to compete in the Australian AUSSI National Championship and came away with High Distinctions.
Adam, Ian and Bill swan a total of 28 events and came home with 22 gold medals and six silver. Even though we only had 3 swimmers the Novos were the third NSW club at the nationals - behind Blacktown and Seaside Pirates. Adam and Bill won their age divisions and Ian was runner up in his age division. Ian’s comment was that the Adelaide pool was the best pool he has ever swum in. Our three swimmers gained 274 points and our club was 19th out of 81 clubs participating.
Adam’s haul was eight gold:
Not to be outdone Ian also came home with eight gold:
Bill brought home six gold and six silver and established anew club record in the 100 back (2.15.05).
The good news for us was that Warringah came 20th with 255 points but unfortunately Gerald the Golden Turkey didn’t travel to Adelaide.

Blacktown – 4th February
Our first bus trip for the year saw the twelve happy campers head down the highway to Blacktown singing rugby songs mixed with nursery rhymes.
Novos were placed third with 472 points (out of 29 clubs) and second in the average point score out of the twelve qualifying clubs.
Ann, Jeanne, Jon and Bill won their age divisions, Drew and Carl were second in theirs and Kay was third in her age division.
Five new club records were established by Jeanne (200 I/M), Jon (100 free) and Carl (50, 100 & 200 back). Our three relay teams had two wins and one third.
Highlight of the day came in the relay competition between our ‘gun’ womens team and the geriatric mens team. The ladies requested a 16 second handicap which was graciously given by the guys. Unfortunately the ladies needed at least 22 seconds. The guys with all humility accepted their win and found it difficult to not show their true emotions.

New club records were set by Emma (200m free), Michelle (50m and 100m breast), Garry (50m back) and Carl (50m, 100m and 200m free).
Age Division winners were Emma, Kay, Wendy and Ann. Rhonda, Michelle and Jeanne were runners up in their age divisions. The boys did not manage any age division prizes but King Kev was their hero by taking out first prize in the days raffle and winning a weekend for two at a Central Coast resort.
The Gosford programme included two relays (4 x 100m freestyle and 4 x 50m freestyle) and our club managed four firsts, three seconds, one third and one fourth.
